We've been using Heartgard for more than 20 years with our dogs (cocker spaniels) and we have never had a problem. We live in Florida, and all kinds of bugs and pathogens are common. Never had a problem with anything being picked up by any of the animals and they are outdoors a lot. They love the taste, take the chews readily, and never have a problem with after effects.
